Football and music legends immortalised at California Desert Turf Grounds

The California Desert Complex Turf is taking shape as final preparations advance at a rapid pace.

Launched by President William Ruto during his tour of Kamukunji, the transformation from a rough field into a modern turf ground is progressing well, creating an environment set to attract local football enthusiasts.

Built on a strong legacy, the management of the grounds has remained mindful of its rich history. In recognition of this, the spectator stands have been named after legendary figures who grew up playing on the once-challenging terrain of California.

The California Desert Turf Grounds feature nine seating stands, each named in honour of a legend or founding member who has played a pivotal role in the local football and entertainment scene.

Among those honoured is DJ Clemo, representing Calif Records, a name synonymous with the rise of ‘genge’ music in Kenya. His contribution to the music industry has left a lasting impact, making him a fitting figure for recognition.

Other notable names include Jua Cali (Paul), TM Kabodi (Moha Daudi), and Nonini (Hubert Nakitare), all pioneers of Kenyan urban music and culture. Additionally, respected football coaches Rashidi Shedu and Hussein Kheri have been acknowledged for their efforts in nurturing young talent, with stands named in their honour.

Furthermore, Salim Ahmed (Lalaa-Biro Biro), Jamal Mohammed (Malo), and Kanji (Abdul Ghadhiaka) have been recognised for their dedication to football development and community upliftment. Each of these figures has left an indelible mark, and their names now stand as a tribute at the heart of the California Desert Turf Grounds.

Daudi Mohammed shared insights into the progress and the decision to name the stands after the legends, stating:

"We are in the final stages, as you can see, the stands are almost complete. I would like to talk about our legends—Rashidi Shedu, our esteemed coach; Salim Ahmed, a true legend who, in fact, passed away on this very ground after playing a key role in implementing this project; and Jamal Mohammed. As for Jua Cali and the others, you already know them—they have all fought to ensure we have this ground."
