Omanyala, Nyaga and Yego lead Kenyan charge at Rome Diamond League

The African record holder leads Kenya’s challenge in Rome, with Julius Yego and a strong distance-running contingent also targeting Diamond League success.

Kenya will be represented across the sprints, throws and distance races when the Wanda Diamond League heads to Rome on Thursday evening, with Commonwealth Games champion Ferdinand Omanyala leading a strong Kenyan contingent at the fourth leg of the prestigious series.
All eyes will be on Omanyala in the men's 100m, where he faces one of the strongest sprint fields assembled this season. The African record holder heads into the race in impressive form, having posted a season’s best of 9.94 seconds, making him the second-fastest athlete in the field this year.
The Kenyan sprinter has enjoyed a strong 2026 campaign, clocking sub-10-second times five times in the last two months and claiming victory at the Xiamen Diamond League in China. However, the challenge in Rome will be far tougher.
Olympic champion Noah Lyles, South African star Akani Simbine, Olympic gold medallist Lamont Marcell Jacobs and Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo are all set to line up, setting the stage for a blockbuster showdown in the Italian capital.
Away from the track, Kenya’s hopes in the field events will rest on African javelin record holder Julius Yego.

The 2015 world champion returns to Diamond League action in a highly competitive men’s javelin contest featuring some of the world’s best throwers. Yego, who owns a personal best of 92.72m and is currently ranked sixth in the world, will face Grenada’s world leader Anderson Peters, Sri Lanka’s Ramesh Pathirage, American Curtis Thompson and Trinidad and Tobago’s Keshorn Walcott, among others.
The veteran Kenyan will be looking to build on his encouraging start to the season as he continues his push towards another major championship campaign.
Kenya will also be represented in the women’s 5000m by Caroline Nyaga and Margaret Akidor.
Nyaga heads to Rome as one of the leading contenders after posting a season’s best of 14:36.55 and carrying a personal best of 14:30.14. She will take on a strong Ethiopian contingent led by Medina Eisa, Likina Amebaw and world-ranked stars Fantaye Belayneh and Aleshign Baweke.
Akidor, meanwhile, will be aiming for a strong showing against a field packed with experienced distance runners from Ethiopia, Italy and Australia.
With Omanyala chasing sprint glory, Yego targeting another big throw and Kenya’s distance runners seeking valuable Diamond League points, Thursday’s meeting presents another opportunity for Kenyan athletes to shine on one of athletics’ biggest stages.
