The football community is in mourning following the death of Austin Oduor Origi, the former Harambee Stars and Gor Mahia captain known for his significant contributions to the sport.

Austin, the father of former Harambee Stars goalkeeper Arnold Origi and uncle to ex-Liverpool and AC Milan forward Divock Origi, passed away recently. His brother, Mike Okoth Origi, confirmed the news, noting that the cause of death is yet to be determined.

His passing comes as a shock, especially after he recently joined the Deputy Chief of Staff in the Executive Office of the President, Eliud Owalo, at his home in Asembo over the weekend. During the weekend, the football legends engaged in various activities in Awendo, including donating sports equipment to local teams.

Austin was part of a distinguished sporting family, which included Mike Okoth, Divock Origi’s father, and his brothers Gerald and Anthony, who also played for local clubs. Born and raised in Ziwani, Austin began his football career with Umeme FC in 1976, eventually moving to Gor Mahia in 1980, where he earned the nickname ‘Makamu’ for frequently deputising icons like Sammy ‘Kempes’ Owino.

He eventually established himself in Gor Mahia’s first team and helped the club secure three consecutive league titles from 1983 to 1985. His crowning achievement came in 1987 when he captained Gor Mahia to victory in the Mandela Cup, defeating Tunisian heavyweights Esperance in the final—solidifying his status as one of the club’s most successful captains.

Austin was also a key player for Harambee Stars, helping the team qualify for three consecutive Africa Cup of Nations tournaments—a streak that remains unmatched to this day.
