Ruth Chepng’etich, a three-time Chicago Marathon champion, is Kenya’s sole finalist for the 2024 Athlete of the Year award after setting a new world record in the marathon this October.

Ruth Chepng’etich, a three-time Chicago Marathon champion, is the only Kenyan finalist for the 2024 Athlete of the Year awards. The self-coached athlete made history in October as the first woman to run a marathon in under 2 hours and 10 minutes, setting a world record of 2:09:56 at the Chicago Marathon. She broke Tigist Assefa’s previous world record of 2:11:53, achieved last year in Berlin.

Chepng’etich joins elite athletes like Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen, Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo, Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands, Saint Lucia’s Julien Alfred, and Sweden’s Mondo Duplantis.

Letsile Tebogo (Botswana)

Botswana’s Tebogo made history with an African record of 19.46 seconds in the 200m, placing him fifth on the all-time list and making him the first African to win an Olympic gold in the 200m. Tebogo’s win came after the loss of his mother, bringing him a hero’s welcome in Botswana, where he was greeted by former President Mokgweetsi Masisi.

Jakob Ingebrigtsen (Norway)

At the Paris Olympics, Ingebrigtsen won the 5,000m gold and went on to set a 3,000m world record this season. He also secured a Diamond League trophy.

Sifan Hassan (Netherlands)

Hassan tackled multiple events at the Olympics, including the marathon, 5,000m, and 10,000m, winning gold in the marathon with an Olympic record time of 2:22:55, as well as bronze in the 5,000m and 10,000m.

Julien Alfred (Saint Lucia)

Alfred claimed gold in the Olympic 100m and silver in the 200m, earning her the title of Best Female Athlete at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Mondo Duplantis (Sweden)

Duplantis set a new pole vault world record of 6.25m and clinched his second Olympic gold, joining USA’s Bob Richards as the only men to achieve consecutive Olympic pole vault titles.

Other finalists for the award include Sydney McLaughlin of the USA and Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia.
