African Union welcomes US-Iran peace deal, praises diplomatic efforts

AUC Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said the agreement marks an important moment for the region and demonstrates the value of negotiations in resolving disputes that have strained international relations for years.

The African Union Commission (AUC) has welcomed the peace agreement signed between the United States (US) and Iran, saying the development could ease tensions in the Middle East and open a new chapter in relations between the two countries.
In a statement, AUC Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said the agreement marks an important moment for the region and demonstrates the value of negotiations in resolving disputes that have strained international relations for years.
The deal, reached after diplomatic efforts involving several countries, has drawn attention from governments and international organisations seeking greater stability in the Middle East. The AU said the agreement offers an opportunity for the parties to move forward through engagement and mutual understanding.
Welcoming the breakthrough, Mahmoud said the agreement sends a message that dialogue remains an effective way of addressing differences between nations.
“This agreement demonstrates the power of dialogue and diplomacy in resolving conflicts and building trust between nations. It offers renewed hope for peace, stability, and cooperation in a region whose security and prosperity have global significance,” he said.

The Commission acknowledged the efforts of leaders and negotiators who took part in the discussions that led to the agreement. It also recognised the contribution of US President Donald Trump, whose administration played a role in advancing the process that resulted in the deal.
It further highlighted the involvement of Pakistan, Oman, and Qatar, which helped facilitate discussions between Washington and Tehran. According to the statement, the three countries contributed to confidence-building efforts and created channels that allowed negotiations to continue.
For years, relations between the US and Iran have been marked by disputes over security, regional influence, and political issues. Those tensions have often affected the wider Middle East and raised concerns among the international community about the risk of further confrontation.
Against that background, the latest agreement is being viewed as a diplomatic achievement that could help reduce uncertainty in the region and encourage greater engagement between countries with competing interests.
Mahmoud expressed hope that the agreement would produce lasting results and strengthen cooperation on issues affecting regional and global security.
He said the deal could help create conditions for stronger relations among countries while supporting efforts that seek to address challenges through peaceful means.
“[The agreement] would pave the way for lasting peace, regional stability, and enhanced international cooperation,” he said.
The AU noted that the agreement reflects principles it has long promoted, including the peaceful settlement of disputes and the use of diplomacy to address international disagreements. The continental body has repeatedly called for negotiations and engagement as alternatives to conflict in different parts of the world.
The Commission said it remains ready to support initiatives that encourage understanding and cooperation among nations. It added that continued commitment from all parties involved will be important in ensuring the agreement delivers its intended outcomes.
