Mahmoud Ali Youssouf reaffirmed the Commission's commitment to promoting integrity, transparency and accountability as critical pillars for sustainable development, peace, security and social justice.

African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has called for intensified efforts to combat corruption as the continent marks African Anti-Corruption Day, saying stronger integrity, transparency and accountability are essential to achieving the goals of Agenda 2063.
African Anti-Corruption Day is observed annually on 11 July to commemorate the adoption of the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption (AUCPCC) in Maputo, Mozambique, in 2003.
In a statement commemorating the day, Mahmoud reaffirmed the Commission's commitment to promoting integrity, transparency and accountability as critical pillars for sustainable development, peace, security and social justice.
This year's African Anti-Corruption Day is being observed under the theme, "Scaling up the Promotion of Integrity and Anti-Corruption Actions Across Africa", which the Chairperson said reflects the African Union's vision of democratic governance founded on shared values.
"The promotion of integrity and the fight against corruption are a shared continental responsibility. By scaling up our collective efforts, we can safeguard Africa's resources, strengthen public trust and accelerate the realisation of Agenda 2063 for the benefit of present and future generations," said the AUC chair.
The Chairperson also cited former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan's observation that, "If corruption is a disease, integrity and transparency are the essential remedies for the rebirth of our continent", stressing that tackling corruption remains central to Africa's development agenda.
Mahmoud commended the African Union Advisory Board Against Corruption (AUABC) for advancing the implementation of the AUCPCC but said legal and institutional frameworks alone were insufficient, calling for a broader culture of ethics, integrity and accountability across African societies.
He urged member states to adopt and implement national integrity and ethics strategies, strengthen multilateral cooperation to accelerate asset recovery and harmonise anti-corruption efforts, while reaffirming the African Union Commission's continued support for the AUABC as the fight against corruption remains a strategic priority for the continental body.
The African Anti-Corruption Day serves as a platform for African countries to reflect on progress in the fight against corruption and strengthen efforts to promote good governance across the continent.
