Kenyan middle-distance runner Pamela Jelimo has been officially confirmed as the silver medallist in the women’s 800m final at the London 2012 Olympic Games after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) completed the reallocation of medals following the conclusion of anti-doping proceedings.
The IOC Executive Board approved the changes after World Athletics amended the official results following the disqualification of Russian athlete Yekaterina Poistogova, who had originally finished second and was awarded the silver medal. Poistogova’s result was later annulled after she was found to have committed an anti-doping rule violation, with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) dismissing her final appeal in May 2025, making the ruling final and binding.
“The IOC Executive Board has taken the decision to reallocate Olympic medals from the London 2012 Olympic Games,” IOC said in a statement.
“Reallocation takes place only after all the remedies have been exhausted by the sanctioned athletes or teams, and once all procedures have been closed.”
Poistogova was among several Russian athletes disqualified from the women’s 800m final, alongside original winner Mariya Savinova and Elena Arzhakova, after separate anti-doping rulings led to their results being annulled.
Following the latest adjustment, Jelimo—who originally finished third—has now been elevated to silver. American runner Alysia Montaño has been upgraded to bronze, while Burundi’s Francine Niyonsaba finishes fourth. Kenya’s Janeth Jepkosgei placed fifth in the revised standings, which now include only five athletes after the disqualifications.
“Reallocation takes place only after all remedies have been exhausted by the sanctioned athletes or teams, and once all procedures have been closed,” the IOC said.
Athletes affected by the reallocation are entitled to receive updated Olympic recognition, including medals, diplomas and medallist pins, with the IOC allowing recipients to choose the timing and venue of their formal presentation ceremonies.
