Mombasa faith groups unite in Sh30 million appeal for Gaza humanitarian aid

The initiative seeks to raise funds for medical relief while promoting unity and solidarity with Palestinians.

The Voice for Palestine Organisation has unveiled plans for a large-scale fundraising event to be held on November 8, 2025, at the Mama Ngina Waterfront in Mombasa, aimed at supporting victims of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The initiative seeks to raise funds for medical relief while promoting unity and solidarity with Palestinians.

Organisers have called on residents of all faiths to turn out in large numbers, noting that the drive targets a collection of Sh30 million. The day’s activities will begin with a solidarity walk from Uhuru Gardens to Mama Ngina Waterfront, starting at 8.30 a.m.

“This is a humanitarian cause that goes beyond religion or background. We are appealing to everyone to stand with Palestine, contribute to the medical fund, and help us plant trees as a gesture of peace and environmental care,” said Ahmed Sharrif, a representative of the organisation.

The campaign has received overwhelming support from over 100 mosques across Mombasa County, each committing to raise at least Sh100,000 before the main event.

Faith leaders are also spreading awareness of the initiative during prayers and community gatherings.

The Mombasa County Government has endorsed the event, pledging to provide security and logistical assistance.

County Executive Committee Member for Youth, Gender, Sports and Social Services, Mbwarali Kame, confirmed the approval, saying the initiative reflects the spirit of compassion and solidarity.

“We have authorised the Voice for Palestine to host this event and will ensure everything runs smoothly. As a county, we stand firmly with this noble cause and urge residents to participate just as Nairobi did earlier this year,” Kame stated.

The group previously raised Sh35 million during a similar campaign in Nairobi, which drew thousands of supporters to Uhuru Park in a peaceful demonstration against Israel’s military offensive in Gaza.

The gathering, which included both Muslims and pro-Palestinian activists, served as a platform to condemn what organisers termed as systematic violations of international law and to raise funds for medical and food aid.

Part of the proceeds from the previous event also went towards planting trees in honour of Palestinians killed in the conflict.

Conditions in Gaza remain dire, with many families surviving on limited supplies as hospitals grapple with acute shortages of medicine and equipment. Rising malnutrition—especially among children has become a growing concern.
