A Sh70 million redevelopment project is set to transform Uhuru Gardens into a modern recreational facility, in a move expected to enhance Mombasa's tourism appeal and provide residents with improved public amenities.
The county government has unveiled plans to upgrade the iconic park, one of the city's most prominent public spaces, as part of ongoing efforts to modernise recreational infrastructure and create more attractive urban environments.
The redevelopment, which has been branded as Uhuru Gardens 2.0, will introduce a range of new facilities aimed at catering for families, fitness enthusiasts, tourists and community groups.
Among the key features planned for the upgraded park are expanded green spaces, family picnic areas, a modern children's playground and outdoor fitness facilities.
Dedicated walking and jogging tracks will also be constructed to encourage healthy lifestyles and provide residents with a safe environment for exercise.
County officials said the project seeks to reposition the park as a central gathering point for social, cultural and recreational activities while preserving its role as one of Mombasa's most recognisable public landmarks.
The planned facelift will also include the construction of modern washrooms and baby-care facilities to improve convenience for families and visitors spending time at the park.
In an effort to support cultural activities and public events, the county government intends to establish a modern amphitheatre that will host entertainment programmes, community gatherings, artistic performances and other social events.
Tourism promotion has also been incorporated into the project through the planned establishment of a Tourist Information Centre. The facility will provide information on Mombasa's historical sites, beaches, cultural attractions and other destinations frequented by local and international visitors.
Additional works will involve extensive landscaping, beautification of the grounds and the installation of a secure perimeter fence aimed at enhancing safety and protecting public property.
According to county officials, the redevelopment forms part of broader efforts to improve the quality of public spaces, encourage outdoor recreation and strengthen Mombasa's position as one of Kenya's leading tourism destinations.
Once completed, the upgraded Uhuru Gardens is expected to serve as a vibrant public space where residents and visitors can relax, exercise, socialise and participate in a wide range of community activities.
