Ministry of Health launches JALI WhatsApp Chatbot to fight Ebola misinformation

The ministry said the platform will offer reliable health guidance, prevention tips and updates on Ebola, while encouraging the public to rely on official sources for information.

The Ministry of Health has launched a WhatsApp chatbot, JALI, to provide Kenyans with verified Ebola information and counter misinformation, as part of efforts to strengthen public awareness and preparedness against infectious diseases.

In a statement shared by Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni on Saturday, the ministry said the platform will offer reliable health guidance, prevention tips and updates on Ebola, while encouraging the public to rely on official sources for information.

The chatbot, which operates through WhatsApp, is designed to give users quick and convenient access to verified information about Ebola virus disease at any time. Members of the public can access the service by saving the number 0700 719 719 and initiating a conversation on the messaging platform.

“Worried About Ebola? JALI Has the Answers! Stay safe and informed with trusted health guidance from the Ministry of Health,” the ministry said in its public advisory.

To use the service, users are required to type “Hello” to begin, after which they are guided through a short process that includes agreeing to terms and conditions, selecting basic demographic details such as age and gender, and then requesting information by typing the keyword “Ebola”. Once this is done, the chatbot provides verified details on the disease, including prevention measures and general public health advice.

The ministry said the platform is intended to provide round-the-clock access to trusted information, helping to reduce fear, confusion and the spread of misinformation during public health emergencies.

The launch forms part of the government's broader efforts to leverage technology in public health communication and disease preparedness. In addition to the WhatsApp service, the ministry has maintained several channels through which members of the public can seek information or report suspected cases.

For more information on Ebola, citizens can dial *719# or contact the ministry through its toll-free hotline 719 and mobile numbers 0716 717717 and 0745 717717.
