Sifuna removed from Oburu-led Energy Committee in Senate shake-up

Sifuna was replaced by Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang’ in the influential committee, which is chaired by Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga.

Embattled ODM Secretary General and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has been removed from the Senate Energy Committee in a reshuffle affecting several standing committees in the Senate.
The changes, announced on Wednesday through a motion tabled in the House, saw Sifuna replaced by Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang’ in the influential committee, which is chaired by Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga.
Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot introduced the motion, indicating that the reconstitution of standing committees was being carried out in line with Senate Standing Orders and a recommendation by the Senate Business Committee.
“I rise to give notice of the following motion, which is a reconstitution of standing committees that, notwithstanding the resolution of the Senate made on February 12, 2025, is the approval of senators to serve in various committees,” Senator Cheruiyot announced.
The reshuffle also affected other committees and senators. Garissa Senator Abdul Haji replaced nominated Senator Beatrice Ogolla in the Energy Committee, while Machakos Senator Agnes Kavindu was appointed to the Senate ICT Committee, replacing Ogolla. Ogolla was, in turn, moved to the Senate Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Committee, where she replaced Kajwang’.

The changes reflect a broader rebalancing of committee membership across the Senate, affecting oversight responsibilities in key sectors including energy, agriculture, and information and communication technology.
Sifuna’s exit from the Energy Committee comes amid his ongoing political differences within the ODM party, where internal divisions have increasingly become public over the party’s direction and its engagement with the Kenya Kwanza administration.
He has been openly critical of ODM’s leadership direction and its engagement with President William Ruto’s administration.
Sifuna was not reassigned to another committee, leaving him with membership in only two committees — the Senate County Public Accounts Committee, chaired by Kajwang' and the Senate National Security, Intelligence and Foreign Relations Committee, chaired by Isiolo Senator Fatuma Dullo.
