Police in Mombasa have arrested five people suspected of involvement in criminal gang activities following heightened security operations in Likoni sub-county.
The arrests were made during a police crackdown in the Duduz and Buffalo areas, which have recently been linked to rising cases of insecurity and reports of an emerging gang accused of terrorising residents in Duduz, Buffalo and Magwangwani.
The operation was led by officers from Shelly Beach Police Station as authorities responded to growing public concern over criminal activities in the area.
Among those arrested are four suspects facing robbery with violence charges and another accused of preparing to commit a felony.
A fifth suspect is expected to face charges related to the possession of government property after he was allegedly found with a military smoke jacket believed to belong to the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).
Police said several exhibits were recovered during the operation, including three machetes and the military jacket. The recovered items have been retained as evidence as investigations continue.
Authorities are also seeking to establish whether the suspects may be linked to other criminal incidents reported in Likoni and neighbouring areas in recent months.
All five suspects have been processed and are set to be arraigned in court to face various charges, including robbery with violence, preparation to commit a felony and unlawful possession of government stores.
Likoni Sub-County Police Commander Joseph Mutungi confirmed the arrests and said security agencies had intensified patrols and operations targeting criminal elements in the area.
He said police would continue pursuing suspects involved in criminal activities as part of efforts to enhance security and protect residents.
