Maraga defends UGM Party, says sexual harassment claims addressed internally

Maraga said the allegations were raised by former campaign staffer Shakira Wafula and two other women, but insisted the matter was addressed through formal internal processes established within the campaign structure.

United Green Movement (UGM) leader and former Chief Justice David Maraga has defended the party’s handling of sexual harassment allegations made by former campaign staffers, saying an internal dispute resolution mechanism and an independent committee found no basis for the claims.
Speaking in an interview on NTV on Thursday, Maraga said the allegations were raised by former campaign staffer Shakira Wafula and two other women, but insisted the matter was addressed through formal internal processes established within the campaign structure.
“We set up an internal dispute resolution mechanism to determine whether these allegations had a basis,” Maraga said. “An independent body was appointed. They listened to the allegations. They found no basis for those allegations.”
Maraga said the committee reviewed the complaints and heard submissions, but noted that one of the complainants did not fully participate in the process. He said she declined to attend the internal proceedings despite being given an opportunity to do so.
“She refused to come,” he said. “She said she had resigned before, but she was entitled to attend. In fact, when we started, that’s when she resigned, and then she refused to come.”

The former CJ added that the accused individual remains within the campaign structure.
“He’s still in the campaign,” Maraga said. “That’s why I’m telling you, these were allegations because these ladies wanted to get out. It’s like they targeted this person because he’s critical in the campaign.”
Maraga maintained that if the complainants were dissatisfied with the outcome, they remained free to pursue other legal channels, including reporting the matter to the police. He said the internal mechanism was established to ensure fairness and operate within a legal framework.
The UGM Party leader also suggested the allegations were linked to staff exits from the campaign, arguing that the complainants had intended to leave at the time the claims were made. “These ladies wanted to get out,” he said.
He insisted the independent committee reviewed the matter and found no basis for disciplinary action.
“You cannot allow somebody to be condemned without a proper basis. That’s why we set up the committee to deal with it. And it dealt with it within the legal framework,” he added.
