DCI arrests recruitment agency director over alleged Sh110,000 Qatar job scam

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested the director of a suspected fraudulent recruitment agency accused of conning a job seeker out of Sh110,000 through a fake overseas employment opportunity.

The suspect, George Waweru Ngendo, the director of Geovany Agencies Limited, was arrested by detectives from the DCI’s Serious Crime Unit following investigations into allegations of obtaining money by false pretences through a purported overseas job recruitment scheme.

In a statement shared on its official X account, the DCI said the arrest followed a complaint from a victim who allegedly lost Sh110,000 after being promised a lucrative job opportunity in Qatar.

“Detectives from the DCI Headquarters’ Serious Crime Unit have arrested George Waweru Ngendo over allegations of obtaining money by false pretences through a purported overseas job recruitment scheme,” the agency said.

According to investigators, the promised employment opportunity was allegedly used as a means of obtaining money through false representations. The DCI said the suspect allegedly received payment from the complainant after presenting the overseas job offer, which later failed to materialise.

Upon completion of investigations, the case file was forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), which approved charges against the suspect.

Waweru is currently being processed and is expected to appear before the Milimani Law Courts on Monday, July 27, 2026, where he will face the charges.

The arrest highlights growing concerns over fraudulent recruitment schemes targeting Kenyans seeking employment abroad. Many job seekers have fallen victim to individuals and agencies offering attractive overseas opportunities in exchange for large sums of money.

The DCI has urged members of the public to exercise caution when engaging recruitment agencies and to verify their legitimacy before making any payments.

“Verify the legitimacy of recruitment agencies before making any payments for overseas jobs. Always confirm that an agency is duly registered and licensed by the relevant government authorities before committing your hard-earned money,” the agency advised.
