Business activities in Isiolo Town were disrupted on Tuesday morning after residents took to the streets to protest the killing of a businesswoman who was shot dead on Monday night by unknown attackers riding a motorcycle.
The demonstrations brought transport and trade to a standstill as protesters blocked roads with barricades and demanded justice for the victim, who was identified as Angelina Kananu. The situation remained tense for several hours as residents called on security agencies to arrest those responsible for the shooting.
According to information from residents, the incident happened at around 9:00 pm on Monday when Kananu was closing her business premises in Isiolo Town. Unknown assailants who were riding a motorcycle reportedly approached her, shot her and fled the scene before they could be identified or arrested.
The killing has shocked residents and traders, many of whom expressed concern over security in the town and called for immediate action from law enforcement agencies. The incident also sparked anger among members of the public who gathered in large numbers on Tuesday morning to protest what they described as increasing insecurity.
Isiolo Governor Abdi Ibrahim Guyo condemned the killing and described it as a tragic incident that had shaken the county.
"I am deeply saddened by the tragic killing of Angelina Kananu, a businesswoman who was fatally shot in a suspected targeted attack in Isiolo Town last night. This is a very unfortunate and heartbreaking incident that has shocked our community," the governor said.
According to the governor, preliminary reports indicate that the attackers were riding a motorcycle when they targeted Kananu as she was closing her business before shooting her and escaping.
Governor Guyo called on security agencies to carry out investigations without delay and ensure those responsible are arrested and prosecuted.
"I strongly urge the security agencies to conduct swift, thorough and impartial investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding this crime and ensure that those responsible are swiftly apprehended and brought to justice. Criminal acts of this nature have no place in our society and must be met with the full force of the law," he said.
He also appealed to residents to remain peaceful and cooperate with investigators by sharing any information that could help police identify the suspects.
The governor urged members of the public not to take the law into their own hands and instead support efforts aimed at ensuring justice is served through the legal process. He said unity between residents and security agencies would be important in helping investigators establish what happened and bring those involved before the courts.
Governor Guyo further conveyed his condolences to the family, friends and relatives of the deceased, saying the county government stood with them during the difficult period following her death.
The shooting has once again raised concerns among residents over security in Isiolo Town, with many calling for increased police patrols and stronger measures to prevent similar incidents. Traders who joined the demonstrations said they wanted authorities to move quickly with investigations and provide answers on the killing.
By Tuesday afternoon, tension remained high in parts of the town as protesters continued to occupy sections of the roads while demanding justice for Kananu.
