The Registrar of Political Parties has formally recognised Edwin Sifuna's removal as ODM secretary general, handing the party leadership a major victory as the Nairobi senator prepares a legal challenge.

ODM's internal leadership dispute has taken a new turn after the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) formally recognised the removal of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as the party's secretary general.

The decision, announced on Thursday, marks a major setback for Sifuna in the battle over the direction and control of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), while strengthening the position of the party's current leadership under Dr Oburu Odinga as it moves to reorganise its top ranks.
In a letter dated July 9, the ORPP confirmed it had approved the leadership changes after reviewing documents submitted by ODM. Registrar of Political Parties John Lorionokou said the office had assessed whether the process complied with both the Political Parties Act and the party's constitution before updating ODM's official records.
"Upon review of the documents submitted by the party and the lack of response from Edwin Watenya Sifuna, we note that the removal of the party Secretary General was in line with the Political Parties Act Cap. 7D and the ODM party constitution," the registrar said.
The decision gives legal recognition to ODM's move to remove Sifuna from the position.
"This office has effected the change and updated the party records," Lorionokou said in the letter.
However, reports indicate that Sifuna has disputed the registrar's decision, arguing that the process leading to his removal was flawed and that the regulator acted before all the relevant issues had been addressed.
According to the Nation, Sifuna, through his lawyer Isaac Okero, questioned the basis of the registrar's decision, claiming that his responses were not properly considered before the leadership changes were entered into the official records.
The Nairobi senator also argued that the registrar relied on communication channels that were not the office's recognised official contacts while disregarding submissions sent through its formal email platforms. He maintains that the process did not comply with the Political Parties Act and says he will seek legal redress to challenge the decision.
The dispute comes amid wider divisions within ODM over the party's political direction and its engagement with the Kenya Kwanza administration following the death of Raila Odinga. Sifuna has repeatedly questioned the working arrangement between ODM and President William Ruto's UDA party, arguing that it should not weaken ODM's role as an opposition party.
