Kalonzo and Sifuna emerge as most preferred opposition pairing in new Infotrak poll

A new report has placed Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as the most preferred opposition presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 General Election, with the pair receiving the highest support among the possible opposition combinations.
According to the July 2026 Voice of the People Poll, a national assessment of Kenya’s political mood ahead of the 2027 General Election by Infotrak, if an election were held today, Kalonzo as the presidential candidate and Sifuna as his running mate would receive 23 per cent support from voters.

Other possible opposition pairings recorded lower support, with Kalonzo and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua receiving 5 per cent, while Gachagua with Kalonzo, Gachagua with Matiang’i and Matiang’i with Gachagua each received 4 per cent.
The poll further shows that Matiang’i, with People Liberation Party leader Martha Karua and a Kalonzo-Karua ticket, would each receive 3 per cent support.
The report indicates that 21 per cent of respondents were not sure or did not know their preferred opposition presidential ticket, showing that the race remains open.

“The most preferred opposition ticket is Kalonzo Musyoka with Edwin Sifuna at 23 per cent,” reads the report.
“The second and third-ranked ticket options are very close: Kalonzo Musyoka with Fred Matiang'i has 16 per cent, while Fred Matiang'i with Kalonzo Musyoka has 15 per cent. No single ticket has majority backing, and "Not Sure/Don't Know" remains high at 21 per cent, signalling an unsettled opposition field.”
The survey further shows the Kalonzo-Sifuna ticket has the strongest support among young voters aged between 18 and 26 years, where it received 31 per cent support, and in the Western region, where it recorded 36 per cent.
The ticket also received 28 per cent support in North Eastern, 26 per cent in Eastern, 24 per cent in Coast, 21 per cent in Central, 20 per cent in Nyanza and 19 per cent in Nairobi.
The Kalonzo-Matiang’i combination recorded its strongest support in North Eastern at 23 per cent and Eastern at 22 per cent.
The Matiang’i-Kalonzo ticket performed best in Nyanza and Nairobi, where it received 19 per cent support in both regions.
On preferred opposition presidential candidates, Kalonzo emerged as the leading contender with 27 per cent support, followed closely by Matiang’i at 26 per cent. Sifuna ranked third with 19 per cent, while Gachagua followed with 9 per cent.
The poll shows Kalonzo’s support was highest in North Eastern at 34 per cent, followed by Eastern and Western, where he received 29 per cent in each region. Matiang’i recorded strong backing in Central at 30 per cent, Nairobi at 27 per cent and Rift Valley at 27 per cent.
Sifuna received his highest support in Western at 35 per cent, while he recorded 25 per cent support in the Coast region.
Among age groups, Kalonzo received his highest support among voters aged over 55 years at 29 per cent, while Matiang’i performed strongly among those aged between 27 and 35 years at 30 per cent.
Sifuna recorded his highest support among young voters aged between 18 and 26 years at 28 per cent.
The survey also found that uncertainty remains higher among women than men, with 23 per cent of women and 18 per cent of men saying they were not sure or did not know their preferred opposition ticket.
Other candidates recorded lower support, with former Chief Justice David Maraga receiving 3 per cent, Karua 2 per cent, while Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, DAP-Kenya leader Eugene Wamalwa, Siaya Senator Okiya Omtatah and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino each received 1 per cent.
The survey found that 10 per cent of respondents were not sure or did not know their preferred opposition presidential candidate.
Nairobi recorded the highest number of undecided voters at 27 per cent, while respondents aged over 55 years recorded the highest level of uncertainty among all age groups at 28 per cent.
The Voice of the People Poll sampled 3,000 respondents across all 47 counties between June 22 and 26, 2026, with a margin of error of ±1.79 per cent at the 95 per cent confidence level.
