4G network
According to the company, its 4G network now covers more than half of the population, with 3,141 live sites in more than 150 towns and cities.
It added that customer acquisition remains steady, with around 31,000 new users joining its network every day.
"Achieving an active customer base of 10 million is a significant milestone for us, but it also brings with it great responsibility. Behind each SIM card, there is an individual, a family, a business, and a future. Our mission is to serve, enable, and support Ethiopia's development through world-class connectivity and innovation. We are proud of our accomplishments and remain committed to further connecting people, creating opportunities, and contributing to a truly digital Ethiopia," said Wim Vanhelleputte, the CEO of Safaricom Ethiopia.
Safaricom Ethiopia stated that it has invested over 300 billion Ethiopian birr (equivalent to around Sh281 billion) in building telecommunications and digital financial services infrastructure over the past four years. It noted that the investment supports both commercial growth and broader social impact.
The company reported that it currently employs 900 people directly, 97 per cent of whom are Ethiopian. It also said that more than 20,000 people have benefited from indirect employment through SIM card sales, distribution, and network deployment roles.
Safaricom Ethiopia’s leadership said the milestone goes beyond the numbers, representing individuals, businesses, and communities across the country.
They reiterated the company’s aim to continue expanding access and contributing to the country’s digital goals.
The company thanked its customers, the Ethiopian government, regulators, and other partners, saying their support has been instrumental in reaching this point.
