Kenya Sevens' hopes of retaining their place in the HSBC SVNS top tier remain alive, but only just, after a disappointing pool-stage campaign at the Bordeaux Sevens left Shujaa relying on both results and mathematics to keep their 2026 dreams on track.
Kevin Wambua's side endured a difficult outing in France, failing to win any of their three Pool A matches and missing out on a place in the Main Cup quarter-finals.
Shujaa opened their campaign with a 31-12 defeat to Fiji before suffering a 26-5 loss to African rivals South Africa. Needing victory against Great Britain on Saturday to keep their quarter-final ambitions alive, Kenya instead fell to a 14-5 defeat that condemned them to the ninth-place playoffs.
Great Britain struck first through Charlton Kerr, who latched onto a well-placed kick ahead and raced away to score. The conversion gave the Britons a 7-0 advantage.
Kenya struggled to gain momentum and were punished again just before halftime when Finley Lloyd-Gilmour capitalised on a loose ball to score Great Britain's second try, extending the lead to 14-0 at the break.
Shujaa improved after the restart and showed greater defensive resilience, but their attacking struggles continued. Patrick Odongo eventually crossed over for Kenya's only try of the match late on, though it proved little more than a consolation as Great Britain held firm for victory.
The defeat left Kenya stranded at the bottom of Pool A and ended any hopes of competing for the tournament title.
Attention has now shifted to the ninth-place playoffs, where every point could determine whether Shujaa remain among the world's elite next season.
Kenya currently sit on 14 overall series points and face Uruguay in the 11th-place playoff. A victory would boost their tally and keep them firmly in the hunt for qualification to the 2026 HSBC SVNS Division One.
However, Shujaa's fate is no longer entirely in their own hands.
Their survival hopes are also tied to results involving the United States and Great Britain. If Kenya win and the USA lose their classification match against Fiji, Shujaa's chances of securing promotion and survival receive a major boost.
A Kenya defeat combined with a USA victory would swing the advantage towards the Americans, while losses for both teams would leave the standings requiring further calculations to separate them.
The situation remains equally delicate regarding Great Britain, whose progress deeper into the competition could also impact Kenya's final position.
Despite the setbacks in Bordeaux, Shujaa still have a route to safety. But after three straight defeats and a missed opportunity in the pool stages, Wambua's men now face a tense final day knowing every minute, every point and every result elsewhere could determine their future in the HSBC SVNS top division.
