2026 FIFA World Cup sets new single-day attendance record with 281,223 fans

The strong attendance, FIFA added, has pushed the total number of fans at the tournament to 1,309,652 so far, with an average of 65,483 per match.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup 2026 has recorded a new milestone in global attendance, with more than 280,000 fans attending four group-stage matches on Tuesday, setting a new record for the competition.
According to FIFA, 281,223 spectators attended World Cup matches featuring France vs Senegal, Norway vs Iraq, Argentina vs Algeria, and Austria vs Jordan, breaking the previous single-day attendance record of 277,070 set during the 1994 tournament.
The day’s fixtures delivered high-scoring encounters across Groups I and J. France defeated Senegal 3–1, with a brace from Kylian Mbappé and a third goal from Bradley Barcola securing the result.
Manchester City striker Erling Haaland scored twice as Norway beat Iraq 4–1, while Argentina registered a 3–0 win over Algeria, highlighted by a hat-trick from Lionel Messi. Austria also claimed a 3–1 victory over Jordan in the final match of the day.
The strong attendance, FIFA added, has pushed the total number of fans at the tournament to 1,309,652 so far, with an average of 65,483 per match. FIFA believes that the competition is now on course to break the all-time World Cup attendance record of 3.5 million, set back in 1994.

“June 16, 2026, will go down in FIFA World Cup history! I cannot thank our fans enough for bringing colour, atmosphere and emotions to this tournament. The FIFA World Cup 2026 continues to show just how much our game is loved and how Football Unites The World!”
World Cup action continues this evening with Portugal taking on DR Congo in Group K at 8:00 pm, followed by England against Croatia in Group L at 11:00 pm. Ghana will then face Panama in Group L at 2:00 am on Thursday, before Uzbekistan meet Colombia in Group K at 5:00 am.
