The modernisation of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) has entered the implementation phase following the signing of an Engineer-Consultant Contract with Dar Al-Handasah Consultants, marking a major milestone in the government’s plan to transform the country’s main aviation gateway into a world-class facility.
Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary (CS) Davis Chirchir witnessed the signing of the agreement, which appoints Dar Al-Handasah Consultants to provide design review, project management, contract administration and construction supervision for the proposed design, development and modernisation of JKIA.
CS Chirchir said the contract marks the beginning of a critical stage in the delivery of a modern, efficient, safe and sustainable airport that meets global aviation standards.
“This marks the beginning of a critical implementation phase as we accelerate the delivery of a modern JKIA that will strengthen Kenya’s position as Africa’s premier aviation gateway and regional air cargo hub,” he said.
The appointment of the consultant clears the way for the technical execution of the project, with Dar Al-Handasah expected to oversee the implementation process and ensure the redevelopment works meet required quality standards, timelines and operational needs.
“The contract appoints Dar Al-Handasah Consultants to undertake design review, project management, contract administration, and construction supervision for the proposed design, development, and modernisation of JKIA,” Chirchir added. “Their expertise will be instrumental in delivering a modern, efficient, safe, and sustainable airport that meets global standards."
The government says the modernisation programme will enhance passenger experience through improved facilities, increase operational efficiency and strengthen aviation safety. The upgraded airport is also expected to support growing passenger numbers and cargo movement as Kenya seeks to reinforce its position as a regional transport and logistics hub.
Beyond aviation, the project is expected to deliver wider economic benefits by boosting tourism, supporting trade, improving connectivity and creating employment opportunities during construction and subsequent operations.
JKIA remains Kenya’s principal international airport and a key gateway for passengers and cargo entering East and Central Africa.
The airport’s modernisation forms part of broader government efforts to expand transport infrastructure and strengthen economic growth through improved connectivity.
