Police in Kibra arrest suspected Panga Squad kingpin in Laini Saba crackdown

A suspected senior member of the notorious Panga Squad gang was arrested with a machete during an intelligence-led police operation in Laini Saba, as authorities intensify efforts to dismantle criminal networks in Kibra.

Police in Kibra have arrested a suspected senior member of the notorious “Panga Squad” gang during an intelligence-led operation targeting criminal networks that have been terrorising residents of Laini Saba, Nairobi.
According to the National Police Service (NPS), officers from Kibra Police Station carried out the operation at the Amref Grounds area in Laini Saba, where the gang was believed to be operating. Upon arriving at the scene, officers encountered several individuals suspected to be members of the gang.
The suspects fled when they spotted the police, prompting a chase through the densely populated settlement. While most of them managed to escape into nearby residential areas, officers continued the pursuit and tracked the group to a hideout.
Police said one suspect, described as a key figure in the gang, was cornered and arrested after a brief confrontation. He was allegedly armed with a machete and resisted arrest before being subdued.
" Police successfully overpowered and arrested one suspect who was armed with a machete. He violently resisted arrest, but officers subdued him and secured the weapon without injury," said NPS.

The suspect is currently in police custody and is being processed ahead of his arraignment in court. Authorities said preliminary investigations link him to several cases of robbery, intimidation and violence attributed to the “Panga Squad,” a gang blamed for instilling fear among residents of Laini Saba and neighbouring areas.
The National Police Service commended members of the public for providing information that helped facilitate the operation, noting that community cooperation remains essential in tackling gang-related crime in informal settlements.
Police also reaffirmed their commitment to sustained operations against criminal gangs in Kibra and other parts of Nairobi, saying the efforts are aimed at restoring public safety and confidence.
In recent weeks, residents have raised concerns over a rise in gang activity across parts of Kibra, calling for sustained security interventions and long-term measures to address youth involvement in organised crime.
The suspect remains in custody as investigations continue.
