Ruto rewards Gor Mahia with Sh10 million bonus after historic 22nd FKF Premier League title

President William Ruto has rewarded Gor Mahia with Sh100,000 per player and Sh10 million for the club after their record 22nd FKF Premier League title, while reaffirming government support for sports development in Kenya.

President William Ruto has pledged continued government support for sports development, announcing cash rewards for Gor Mahia FC following their record-extending 22nd FKF Premier League title win. Each player will receive Sh100,000, while the club will get Sh10 million, during a ceremony held at State House, Nairobi.
Speaking during the trophy presentation, the President congratulated the champions for reclaiming the league crown and praised their consistency, discipline and resilience throughout the season. “Today, we celebrate more than a football trophy. We celebrate excellence, resilience, consistency, and the power of teamwork,” he said.
Ruto said the cash rewards are part of efforts to recognise sporting excellence and motivate continued success in Kenyan football. “I will organise to see that each one of you leaves here with Sh100,000 first. For the team, the chairman will give me your account and organise Sh10 million, and in the future you look for me,” Ruto said. “The Sports CS will ensure the government organises how to support your talent.”
He reaffirmed the government’s broader commitment to sports development, citing ongoing investments in grassroots talent identification, improved sporting infrastructure, professionalisation of sports management and stronger governance systems aimed at boosting competitiveness.
The President commended Gor Mahia for bouncing back strongly after losing the previous season’s title, saying their response reflected determination and strong character. He also highlighted key moments in their campaign, including decisive fixtures such as the Mashemeji Derby, which helped define their championship run.

Ruto further praised both individual and collective achievements within the club, pointing to recognition at the SportPesa End-of-Season Awards. “These honours are a testament to the quality, leadership and professionalism that exist throughout the club,” he said, referencing Coach of the Season Charles Akunnor and Most Valuable Player Enock Morrison.
Beyond domestic success, he lauded Gor Mahia’s contribution to the national team setup, noting their strong representation in Harambee Stars for the African Nations Championship. “Your success is therefore not only a victory for your club, but also a victory for Kenya,” he said.
