William Sawe has been appointed Commandant of the Presidential Escort Unit, replacing Noah Kirwa Maiyo in a National Police Service reshuffle affecting senior officers in elite security formations.

The National Police Service has announced a reshuffle within its specialised formations, appointing William Sawe as the new Commandant of the Presidential Escort Unit (PEU).
According to a notice issued by Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat, the changes see Noah Kirwa Maiyo moved from his position as PEU Commandant to Kenya Police Headquarters under the Vigilance Department.
Sawe, who previously served as Commanding Officer of the Recce Sub Unit, now takes over leadership of the elite unit with immediate effect.
Other changes within the formation include the appointment of George Kirera as Deputy Commandant of the PEU, while Josphat Sirma has been elevated to Commanding Officer of the Recce Sub Unit.
Juda Mathews Gwiyo, who served as Deputy Commandant of the PEU, has been directed to proceed on leave pending retirement. Separately, Rere Kipkoech has been transferred from the PEU and posted to the Kenya Police Headquarters under the Vigilance Department.
The National Police Service stated that the adjustments take effect immediately and form part of ongoing administrative reforms within specialised units tasked with key security operations.
The Presidential Escort Unit, responsible for the security of the Head of State and other protected persons, is considered a sensitive formation, making changes in its leadership closely watched within security circles.
Maiyo, a long-serving officer who has held senior positions within the unit over the years, exits the command role as Sawe assumes leadership of the formation.
The reshuffle comes amid broader efforts by the police service to review command structures aimed at improving efficiency, coordination, and operational readiness across elite units.
