Motorists brace for traffic disruption as KeNHA closes part of Nairobi Expressway
The authority said the closure is necessary to allow for the installation of fabricated footbridge beams for the Airtel Footbridge across the expressway carriageway which is part of ongoing efforts to improve pedestrian safety along the busy highway.
Motorists using a section of the Nairobi Expressway and Mombasa Road will face a 24-hour traffic disruption after the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) announced a temporary closure of a busy section of the corridor to facilitate the installation of footbridge beams.
In a public notice issued on Thursday, June 11, KeNHA said the Mombasa-bound carriageway of Mombasa Road (A8) and both carriageways of the Nairobi Expressway between Airtel Complex and General Motors (GM) will be closed from 10 pm on Saturday, June 13, to 10 pm on Sunday, June 14, 2026.
The authority said the closure is necessary to allow for the installation of fabricated footbridge beams for the Airtel Footbridge across the expressway carriageway, which is part of ongoing efforts to improve pedestrian safety along the busy highway.

During the 24 hours, motorists will be diverted through the Airtel Complex interchange and connecting loop roads to bypass the construction zone before rejoining Mombasa Road beyond the affected section.

Motorists heading into the CBD via the Nairobi Expressway will encounter a closure at the Cabanas section and will be redirected onto the Mombasa Road carriageway, where they will continue their journey into the city centre under the guidance of traffic marshals.
Alternatively, drivers approaching from the Mombasa-bound direction may use the Ole Sereni interchange to bypass the affected section before reconnecting to their intended routes.
KeNHA urged road users to strictly follow the traffic management plan during the closure period and to cooperate with police officers and traffic marshals deployed on site to ensure the smooth flow of traffic and safety.
