This new feature, rolling out gradually across devices and domains, allows users to choose from a variety of emoji reactions, like a thumb-up, heart, celebration emoji, or even a food icon to vote on team lunch plans.
Whether you are thanking a teammate, congratulating a client, or just acknowledging a message, emoji reactions offer a quick, expressive alternative to traditional replies.
When available, users will see an “Add emoji reaction” option below an email.
Clicking it reveals a menu of emojis to choose from, providing an instant and visually engaging response.
All reactions appear at the bottom of the message thread, where others in the conversation can see and join in.
Google notes that emoji reactions are best experienced on the Gmail mobile app or via Gmail.com on the web. However, users should be aware that reactions cannot be sent to emails received via a Google Group alias or to messages with Google Groups included in the recipient list.
For organisations using Google Workspace, emoji reactions are off by default and must be enabled by administrators. Admins can activate the feature by navigating to the Admin console: Apps To Gmail To End User Access To Emoji reactions.
