Uganda hit by nationwide blackout after grid failure

Despite the announcement, many Ugandans reported that the blackout was still on in their areas, suggesting lingering disruptions following the grid failure.

Uganda was plunged into total darkness on Friday night following a massive system failure on the national grid.
This was confirmed by notices issued by the power distribution company, the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL), and the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL), which manages high voltage transmission in the country.
“Dear customer, our power supplier, UETCL, has notified us of a nationwide grid outage affecting electricity supply. UETCL’s technical teams are working to restore supply as quickly as possible. We regret the inconveniences caused,” the UEDCL alert said.
UETCL said power went out at 9:07 pm local time and was restored a few hours later.
“Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL) informs the public that the national grid has been fully restored. We sincerely apologise for any inconveniences caused,” UETCL said two hours after the blackout.
