President William Ruto has joined leaders from across the world in mourning the death of Qatar's former Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, saying his leadership changed the country and laid the foundation for its growth.
Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa died on Sunday. Heads of state and governments across the world on Sunday and Monday paid tributes and continued to honour his contribution to Qatar's development and his role in regional and international affairs.
In his condolence message, President Ruto expressed sympathy to Qatar's ruling family, the government and the people of the Gulf nation following the death of the former leader, who is the father of the current Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
The Kenyan leader said he was speaking on behalf of the Government and the people of Kenya in extending condolences during a period of mourning in Qatar.
"It is with profound sorrow that I extend my heartfelt condolences following the passing of His Highness the Father Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, father of His Highness The Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani," Ruto said.
The President said Kenya stands with Qatar during this period of mourning and expressed support for the Al Thani family as well as the country's leadership and citizens.
"On my own behalf, and on behalf of the Government and people of the Republic of Kenya, I convey my deepest sympathies to Your Highness, the Al Thani family, and the Government and people of the State of Qatar," he said.
Ruto said Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani would be remembered for leading Qatar through a period that changed the country's economy and institutions, adding that his leadership helped shape the modern state.
"I pray for the eternal repose of his soul, and for strength, comfort, and fortitude for Your Highness and the entire Qatari nation during this time of profound loss," he said.
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta also extended his condolences to the family and Qatar citizens at large.
“The late Father Emir was a visionary statesman who transformed Qatar into a modern, prosperous nation and championed education, diplomacy, and sustainable development. His legacy will continue to inspire generations across the world. He will be remembered with gratitude for his dedication to fostering global partnerships and for strengthening the bonds of friendship between our two nations,” he said.
Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani served as Amir of Qatar from 1995 until 2013, when he handed over power to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
During his time in office, Qatar expanded its economy through the development of its natural gas industry and increased its role in diplomacy, investment and international affairs.
His leadership also saw the country invest in infrastructure, education and health, while strengthening its presence on the global stage through diplomacy, media and major international events.
The death of the former Amir has drawn messages of condolence from leaders across the Middle East, Africa, Europe and other regions, with many recognising his role in shaping Qatar's development and strengthening its relations with other countries.
Kenya and Qatar have maintained diplomatic relations over the years, with the two countries cooperating in areas including trade, labour, investment and transport.
