IG Douglas Kanja explained that the 114 polling stations set for the by-election will be adequately provided with security, in line with standard deployment procedures.

The Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, has deployed over 1,000 police officers, including four platoons of the General Service Unit (GSU), the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU), to provide adequate security during Ol Kalou’s Thursday by-election.
Speaking on Tuesday during an Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) briefing on the by-election’s preparedness, IG Kanja explained that the 114 polling stations set for the by-election will be adequately provided with security, in line with standard deployment procedures.
“This means that we have a minimum of two police officers in every polling station. Their work shall be to safeguard the voting materials and the voting process itself, while offering adequate security, ensuring that the electoral officials perform their duties well and unhindered. Additionally, there are teams deployed at all polling stations comprising not less than 14 police officers at every polling station to ensure robust security coverage," said Kanja.
Further to this, he said there are specialised teams that have been deployed to give an overall and unbreachable security ring.
"I have deployed four platoons of the General Service Unit officers, I have deployed four platoons of the anti-stock theft unit officers, I have also deployed four water cannons, sufficient deployment from the DCI whose mandate shall focus on intelligence gathering, investigations, arrest and prosecution of any party of individuals involved in any electoral malpractice,” the IG noted.
“As the Inspector General of the National Police Service (NPS), mine is a message of assurance and affirmation that the people of Ol Kalou are expected to practice their democratic right in a free, fair, peaceful and secure manner as guided by our constitution and the laws of the land.”
