DJ, crew and 3 officers to be arraigned over killing of Kabete DCI boss

The seven are being held at Muthangari police station where they have since recorded their statements.

A popular Kenyan DJ, his three-member crew and three traffic police officers from Kikuyu Police Station will be arraigned tomorrow over the death of Kabete Deputy Director of Criminal Investigations Felix Kelian Kitosi, who died days after an altercation with the suspects.

The seven are being held at Muthangari police station, where they have since recorded their statements.

The officer was reported dead on Friday evening by his brother Reinhard Kitosi, who told DCI Detectives based at Dagoretti that he succumbed while undergoing treatment at Nairobi West Hospital.

"Preliminary investigations reveal that he was assaulted by known persons after an altercation over the non-injury road traffic accident," the OB report stated.

According to Reinhard, his brother had been involved in a non-injury traffic accident within Kikuyu market near Kikuyu police station on March 16 at about 4 am after which he complained of abdominal pains and sought treatment in Lang'ata before being referred to Nairobi West Hospital.

Following the detective's death, the police rounded up the DJ and his crew, consisting of a master of ceremonies, a bouncer, a driver and a photographer.

During their arrest, the DJ is heard in a viral clip asking "mkubwa ako wapi" (where is the boss?) before he is bundled into the police vehicle.

Arrest of officers

They also arrested three traffic police officers from Kikuyu police station who responded to the scene on the night of the accident and altercation.

"They are being held as suspects of murder in relation to the death of Inspector Felix Kelian Kitosi," a police report confirming the arrest of the officers stated.

On the night the accident happened, the DJ and his crew had left Club Texas in Kikuyu, Kiambu County, where he was hosting a show.

While driving his car, it was hit from behind by an oncoming vehicle, forcing him to stop and check, accompanied by his crew.

Reports indicate that the officer attempted to drive off, but the DJ and his crew managed to reach the ignition key and switch off the vehicle, leading to a brawl.

The DJ went ahead and called the club asking for help, and the club reached out to the Kikuyu police station which sent officers to the scene.

The officers, who are reported to have sided with the DJ, arrested the senior officer and booked him at Kikuyu police station until around 10 am when they released him on March 16.

Succumbed

Five days later, the officer succumbed at Nairobi West Hospital while undergoing treatment.

Two autopsies have since been done on his body, with government pathologist Peter Ndegwa saying he died of pancreatic disease.

The police have remained silent over the matter even as reports allege an attempted cover-up of the truth by some in a bid to defeat justice.

The National Police Service standing orders indicate that if there is a conflict or complaint by an officer of one service against an officer of another service, the matter shall be investigated by the Internal Affairs Unit.

However, such a directive can only be issued by the Inspector General of Police.

At the same time, the National Police Service Act states that the authorities may at any time intervene and take over the investigations when they have reason to believe the investigations are inordinately delayed or manifestly unreasonable.

The incident comes days after nine individuals accused of killing Kamaindi Chief Japheth Majau Mukengu in 2019, were sentenced to 30 years in prison.

The chief was killed in April 2019 in the Kamaindi area of Chuka, and his body was set ablaze following a land dispute.
