Rwanda’s Celestin Nsanzuwera made a winning start to the season by securing the opening leg of the Sunshine Development Tour East Africa Swing, played over three days at Thika Sports Club.
The Kigali Golf Resort professional finished on 4-under par 209 after a steady level-par final round, sealing victory by a single stroke. He had been in control for most of the day, collecting birdies on the 1st, 7th, 8th, 13th, and 15th holes to build a comfortable lead.
The closing stretch, however, brought late tension. Nsanzuwera dropped shots on the final three holes, including a double bogey on the 17th, but held on to claim the title.
Speaking after lifting the trophy, Nsanzuwera said, “I’m very happy to win the first tournament of the season. It was not easy today because there was pressure, especially over the closing holes, but I stayed focused and trusted myself.”
He added, “Winning early in the season gives me confidence and momentum. My goal now is to keep working hard and remain consistent in the coming events.”
The win earned him Sh400,000 from the Sh2 million prize fund, along with 210 Order of Merit points.
Kenya’s Samuel Njoroge and debutant Michael Karanga shared second place on 3-under par 210, just one shot behind the winner.
Njoroge, representing Kenya Railway Golf Club, impressed with a final round of 68, highlighted by five birdies.
“I gave it a good push today, and I’m pleased with how I responded. I stayed patient, made some birdies and gave myself a chance. It’s a positive start to the season and something to build on,” Njoroge said.
Karanga also delivered a strong performance in his first professional outing, showing consistency throughout his round.
“I’m very encouraged by this result. To finish on the podium in my first event as a professional means a lot. It gives me belief that I can compete at this level, and I’m excited for what’s ahead,” Karanga said.
Both players earned Sh179,400 and 144 Order of Merit points.
Elsewhere, Mohit Medirrata finished fourth, while Greg Snow of Muthaiga Golf Club placed sixth.
Tanzania’s Nuru Mollel was the best-placed foreign player, ahead of Uganda’s Ronald Rugumayo and Phillip Kasozi.
Amateur Junaid Manji produced the standout round of the final day with a 4-under 67 to climb into a tie for ninth alongside Edwin Mudanyi of Karen Country Club.
A total of 59 players from eight countries competed in the event, which marked the start of the new season. The tour now heads to Royal Nairobi Golf Club in June for the next leg.
