Gor Mahia announced themselves as serious contenders for the 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup after thrashing Rwandan champions APR FC 5-0 in their Group A opener at Amahoro Stadium in Kigali on Friday night.
The victory not only sent the Kenyan champions to the top of Group A on goal difference but also marked a competitive start for head coach Charles Akonnor, whose revamped side delivered one of Gor Mahia's most dominant performances against the Rwandan giants.
Having arrived in Kigali looking to overturn a head-to-head record against APR, K'Ogalo showed little sign of nerves, matching the hosts from the opening whistle before taking complete control of the contest.

Captain Mike Kibwage, who led the side in the absence of injured skipper Sylvester Owino, broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute when he scored.
Barely two minutes later, Cameroonian striker Patrick Essombe doubled the advantage with a superb low strike from the edge of the area after APR's defence failed to close him down quickly enough, giving Gor Mahia a commanding 2-0 lead at the break.
APR attempted to respond after the restart but struggled to break down Gor Mahia's defence marshalled by Kibwage and Frank Odhiambo, while Akonnor's midfield trio of Alpha Onyango, Jackson Dwang and debutant Enock Machaka controlled possession.

Another debutant, Lesley Otieno, added the fourth six minutes later to cap an impressive first outing in Gor Mahia colours before Ghanaian forward Ebenezer Assifuah-Inkoom came off the bench to complete the rout in the 85th minute, firing home the fifth goal to seal a memorable night for the Kenyan champions.
Akonnor handed competitive debuts to several new arrivals, including Paul Okoth, David Okoth and Enock Machaka, with the new recruits integrating seamlessly into a side that combined defensive solidity with clinical finishing.
The result was a major statement from Gor Mahia, who entered the tournament using it as part of their preparations for the upcoming FKF Premier League season and CAF Champions League campaign. It also ended APR's hopes of beginning their home tournament with a positive result in front of their supporters.
The convincing victory places Gor Mahia at the summit of Group A ahead of Uganda's Vipers SC, who defeated Djibouti's Garde Républicaine 3-0 in the group's other fixture.
K'Ogalo will now turn their attention to a crucial clash against Vipers SC on Monday, with victory likely to move them within touching distance of the knockout stages.
