The United Nations has called for collective action to nurture and promote hope as a catalyst for peace, inclusion and sustainable development as the world marks this year’s International Day of Hope.
Observed annually on July 12, the day celebrates and promotes hope as a universal guiding principle that empowers individuals, strengthens communities and fosters cooperation among nations.
“The declaration of the International Day of Hope is more than symbolic—it is a global invitation to act. It calls on member states, regional and international bodies, civil society, and individuals to cultivate environments where hope can thrive. These efforts may include public education, awareness campaigns, community outreach, acts of kindness, and the promotion of forgiveness and reconciliation. By embracing these values, societies can foster inclusion, empathy, and resilience,” the UN said in a statement on Sunday.
The International Day of Hope was established by the UN General Assembly to highlight the importance of hope in addressing global challenges and advancing peace, human dignity, inclusion and sustainable development.
According to the UN, hope plays a critical role in peacebuilding by fostering trust, encouraging dialogue between communities and empowering young leaders. It also promotes greater social cohesion and reconciliation, key pillars of community healing that lay a strong foundation for lasting peace.
"In a world facing growing unrest, widening social divisions, and persistent economic and environmental challenges, the global community continues to seek values that unite rather than divide. Among these, hope stands out as a deeply powerful and universally resonant force," the UN adds.
The organisation said the day serves as a reminder that, even in times of uncertainty and adversity, hope remains a powerful force for resilience, collective action and the pursuit of a more just and prosperous future for all.
“Across the globe, young people are stepping up as leaders, innovators, activists and more to tackle shared challenges. Let’s match their determination with greater investments to ensure young people have the freedom, opportunity and support to shape their lives and contribute meaningfully to their communities,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged in a post on X.
The UN added that the observance underscores hope as a transformative force capable of bridging divides, driving progress and uplifting the human spirit.
“The International Day of Hope invites all of us to pause, reflect, and recommit to a future built not on despair or division, but on shared humanity and the unwavering belief in a better tomorrow,” the UN added.
