UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron said the mission stands ready for deployment to support freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

France and the United Kingdom (UK) have reached an agreement with Oman to cooperate on restoring safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz by deploying a multinational military mission.
In a joint statement, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron said the mission is ready for deployment to support freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
“The Strait of Hormuz is a vital artery for the global economy. Restoring safe transit for ships of all nations through the Strait is a matter of global concern. The Sultanate of Oman has agreed to work with the United Kingdom and France to ensure that its sovereign territorial waters are safe for navigation,” the two said.
They reaffirmed their shared commitment to regional stability, respect for the sovereignty of all States, and their willingness to maintain close cooperation with partners to uphold global security, freedom of navigation, and international law.
France has already deployed mine countermeasure assets to the Middle East, including two minehunters, two frigates, and a maritime patrol aircraft, which are ready to contribute alongside partners to the full resumption of navigation and to ensure the safety of traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.
President Macron said France remains fully engaged and will continue to adjust its assets based on the evolving situation and the region’s security needs.
The deployment is deemed necessary as the memorandum of understanding signed by the United States and Iran, an important step forward for regional stability, particularly by reaffirming freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, remains fragile, with both states quickly resuming military strikes.
The two sides have also accused each other of violating the terms of the MoU, including Article 5, which calls for safe passage for commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz.
