Ruto pledges Sh80 million support fund for artisans, skills certification programme

President William Ruto has pledged greater government support for informal sector workers, announcing a government-funded artisan certification programme and a Sh80 million fund to provide tools and equipment to help skilled workers improve their livelihoods.

Speaking on Thursday at State House, Nairobi, while hosting artisans from Nairobi, Ruto said the initiatives were aimed at supporting workers who have practical skills but lack formal certification, enabling them to access employment opportunities and participate in national development projects.

The President said the government had already set aside resources to support experienced artisans who acquired their expertise through practical training and apprenticeship but do not have official certificates.

“We have a government programme and the funding is already available. If you are a skilled worker who already has the practical skills but does not have a certificate, we are ready to support you,” Ruto said.

Ruto said the certification would enable more artisans to access jobs and participate in national development projects, especially under the Affordable Housing Programme, which requires a larger pool of skilled construction workers.

The President also announced that the government would provide Sh80 million to purchase tools and equipment for artisans to support their businesses.

He urged artisans to prepare lists of the equipment they require, saying the government would work with leaders to ensure the tools reach those who need them.

"I will arrange how you will get the equipment to run your crafts and businesses. I want you to prepare a list of the equipment you need, then we will plan with these leaders how we will provide those tools. I will give Sh80 million to buy equipment for you so that you can do your businesses," Ruto said.

The Head of State also assured traders and artisans that the government would continue efforts to create a secure environment where Kenyans can operate businesses without fear or intimidation.

He said the government would take firm action against criminal gangs, popularly referred to as goons, to protect citizens and restore order.

"We are going to have a secure country, and all Kenyans will run their businesses without fear. The same way we dealt with terrorists and cattle rustlers is the same way we will deal with goons," Ruto said.
