The vacancies are aimed at supporting career progression for serving teachers while strengthening the implementation of Competency Based Education (CBE) in junior schools.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced 54,016 vacancies for teachers and curriculum support officers, including 34,016 promotion opportunities and 20,000 permanent and pensionable positions for post primary teachers to teach in junior schools.
The vacancies are aimed at supporting career progression for serving teachers while strengthening the implementation of Competency Based Education (CBE) in junior schools.
The Commission said qualified teachers and Curriculum Support Officers interested in the promotion positions should submit their applications online through the TSC portal by midnight on Monday, August 10, 2026.
For the Junior School teaching positions, applications will open on Tuesday, August 18, 2026 and close at midnight on Monday, August 31, 2026.
TSC said manual applications for both exercises will not be considered and successful candidates will be deployed to institutions where vacancies are available.
The 34,016 promotion vacancies cover different positions in public primary schools, secondary schools and teachers training colleges, ranging from Senior Teacher II to Chief Principal.
The highest number of promotion opportunities are for Senior Teacher II positions at 13,490, followed by Senior Master IV positions at 5,956 and Senior Teacher I positions at 4,210.
Other advertised positions include 54 Chief Principal positions for regular schools, seven Chief Principal positions for teachers training colleges, 148 Senior Principal positions for regular schools, seven Senior Principal positions for teachers training colleges, 770 Principal positions for regular schools, seven Principal positions for teachers training colleges and six Principal positions for special needs education.
The Commission also advertised 891 Deputy Principal II positions, 15 Senior Lecturer I positions, two Senior Master I positions, 34 Curriculum Support Officer I positions, seven Curriculum Support Officer I positions for special needs education, 1,068 Deputy Principal III positions, five Deputy Principal III positions for special needs education, 199 Senior Headteacher positions and five Senior Headteacher positions for special needs education.
The vacancies further include 34 Senior Lecturer II positions, 272 Senior Master II positions, 69 Curriculum Support Officer II positions, 1,865 Deputy Headteacher I positions, 20 Deputy Headteacher I positions for special needs education, 44 Senior Lecturer III positions, 1,665 Senior Master III positions, 3,075 Deputy Headteacher II positions, 20 Deputy Headteacher II positions for special needs education, 51 Senior Lecturer IV positions, 20 Secondary Teacher I positions and other teaching positions.
The promotion exercise follows the allocation of Sh2 billion in the 2026/27 Budget Estimates to support the promotion of about 30,000 teachers across different grades.
TSC had earlier informed Parliament that 178,871 teachers had remained in the same job groups due to budget challenges, with many in Grade C3 for secondary schools and Grade C1 for primary schools despite meeting promotion requirements.
TSC Chairman Jamleck Muturi said the Sh2 billion allocation would help promote more teachers during the financial year.
“Sh2 billion has been earmarked to facilitate the promotion of approximately 30,000 teachers across various grades. These promotions are intended to recognise merit, reward experience and provide career growth opportunities for deserving teachers,” Muturi said.
He said TSC had promoted 274,285 teachers over the past three years, including 100,067 through competitive promotions and 174,218 through common cadre promotions.
“TSC data reveals that many teachers have stagnated in the same job group for many years. The good news is that with the Sh2 billion budgetary allocation, we will promote more teachers again this financial year,” he said.
Applicants for promotion positions must meet the requirements under the Career Progression Guidelines for Teachers and Curriculum Support Officers, including serving the required period in their current grades, having satisfactory performance ratings and showing ability to support and mentor other teachers. Successful candidates will also be required to present valid Chapter Six clearance documents.
For the 20,000 junior school teaching positions, TSC said applicants must be Kenyan citizens, hold at least a diploma in education with a minimum mean grade of C+ and C+ in two teaching subjects in KCSE or its equivalent, and be registered teachers with the commission.
The selection process will be based on merit and available vacancies in each county. Candidates must present original academic and professional certificates, while successful teacher interns will remain in their current sub counties or stations.
TSC said successful candidates will teach various learning areas under the Junior School Curriculum and warned applicants that the recruitment exercise is free of charge.
“The recruitment exercise is free of charge. TSC forewarns applicants against fraudsters who might extort money from unsuspecting persons purporting to assist in recruitment,” reads the notice.
The Commission asked anyone who encounters fraudulent activities to report them to the nearest TSC office, its headquarters through the staffing contacts provided, or the nearest police station.
