UN Rights Office condemns targeting of Mbuti indigenous people in Beni, North Kivu

UNJHRO said the latest incident took place on the night of May 30-31, 2026, against their camp in Ngadi, in the Ruwenzori commune, Beni.

The UN Joint Human Rights Office (UNJHRO) in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has condemned the targeting of Mbuti indigenous people in attacks perpetrated by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) in Beni, North Kivu.
In a statement, UNJHRO said the latest incident took place on the night of May 30-31, 2026, against their camp in Ngadi, in the Ruwenzori commune, Beni.
A total of seven deaths were reported, six of whom were members of the Mbuti community, including a woman.
“The comedian and artist Shukrani Nzanzu Mangese, killed along with several members of his family, was also among the victims. There are also reports of several people missing,” the statement read in part.
The Office added that the attack follows a persistent climate of insecurity and targeted violence in the Beni territory, exacerbating the multidimensional vulnerability of indigenous peoples, who already face forced displacement from their ancestral lands, loss of natural habitat, and limited access to humanitarian assistance.

“Over 300 civilians have been summarily executed by the ADF since the beginning of the year in the provinces of Ituri and North Kivu. The Congolese authorities have an obligation to guarantee the safety of all civilians, with particular attention to historically marginalised groups who are especially vulnerable during armed conflict,” the statement adds.
UNJHRO further urged the authorities to immediately open an independent, prompt, and impartial investigation into the circumstances of the attack to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
It also called for emergency humanitarian assistance and support for survivors and families affected by the tragedy, as well as strengthened protection of civilians and security for camps and living areas of Indigenous Peoples, in line with the law on the protection and promotion of their rights.
“UNJHRO reaffirms its unwavering commitment to working alongside the institutions of the Republic and civil society to promote and protect human rights and combat impunity in the Democratic Republic of the Congo,” the agency stated.
