Fresh from one of the biggest victories of her career, world champion Lilian Odira has set her sights on even faster times, Commonwealth Games success and a place in the Diamond League Final after outlining her ambitions following a memorable triumph at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene.
The Kenyan middle-distance star strengthened her reputation among the world's elite by winning the women's 800 metres in a season's best 1:56.19, outkicking Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson of Great Britain, who finished second in 1:56.73. American Addison Wiley completed the podium with a season's best of 1:57.70.
Speaking moments after the race, an elated Odira described the victory as a special milestone, having competed in the United States for the first time.
"I'm so grateful," she said. "Coming to the USA and competing at the Prefontaine Classic for the first time and winning is just amazing."
The victory capped an impressive run of form for the reigning world champion, who has now finished on the podium in every race this season.
Since claiming the world title in Tokyo last September, Odira has continued to cement her place among the world's leading women's 800m runners, adding another prestigious Diamond League victory to her growing list of achievements.
Despite her recent success, the Kenyan says her biggest goals are still ahead.
"This year, I'm just focusing on getting a personal best and doing my ultimate," she said. "I'll be going to the Commonwealth Games, and hopefully I'll make it to the Diamond League Final."
Odira admitted she had expected an even faster race in Eugene, given the strength of the field and the planned pace.
"I was expecting a faster race because the pace was supposed to be 55.5 seconds," she explained. "I knew it would be a fast race because it was a strong field with athletes capable of running quick times. I'm just grateful for the race, and I'm happy."
Her winning time of 1:56.19 was not only a season's best but also the fastest women's 800m recorded on American soil this year, underlining the quality of her performance.
The decisive moment came in the closing metres as Odira unleashed her trademark finishing kick to surge past Hodgkinson and seal victory.
Asked about her devastating finishing speed, the Kenyan smiled.
"I think that has always been my strength. I always do my thing," she said.
The win marked another significant step forward after her third-place finish at the Rabat Diamond League, where she clocked 1:57.27. It also followed her victory at the Kenyan Commonwealth Games trials at Nyayo National Stadium, where she comfortably secured her place on the national team.
With confidence continuing to grow and major championships approaching, Odira believes she is building towards an even stronger second half of the season.
For now, though, she is savouring a moment she will never forget.
"I'm so happy being in the US for the first time and winning the Prefontaine Classic," she said. "It's just amazing."
If her performances this season are any indication, the world champion's rise is only just gathering momentum.
